The speculation around the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team could be crafting a more action-oriented experience instead of another tactical title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it kicked off the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—qualities that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities you can achieve with a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.
The series is also wonderfully open-ended, allowing players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be approached in a variety of manners, frequently in surprising fashion.
- You might find an answer because you heeded something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can get ready for another adventure in this legendary franchise.
