This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like standard physical horror, but inside Together exists a deep examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story commences when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something horrific). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple face the type of challenges that come with most partnerships after ten years. At their core, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor never feels overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can undertake right now.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
